Vladimir Nabokov: dos veces refugiado

Si hablamos de refugiados famosos, Vladimir Nabokov fue uno de los más reconocidos en este sentido por su trabajo en el terreno de la literatura, dejando un legado de obras vanguardistas. Gracias a Lolita, su novela más conocida y que aún continúa leyéndose y editándose en todo el mundo, llegó a la fama mundial.Nacido en una familia aristócrata en la ciudad rusa de San Petersburgo, la filiación política de su padre, heredada de su abuelo, lo obligó a abandonar Rusia en 1917 durante la revolución bolchevique. La familia se instaló a duras penas y con pocas pertenencias en Berlín, abandonando para siempre la vida de lujos y soportando una pobreza extrema. De esta manera, Vladimir Nabokov se convertía en refugiado y sobrevivía con su familia con un fondo de ayuda para personas que huían de países en conflicto. Nunca más recuperarían su posición económica, pero el joven Vladimir pudo estudiar y consiguió, poco a poco, salir adelante.En 1939 sufriría un segundo exilio con el arribo del nazismo en Alemania. Se había casado con Vera, una joven judía, por lo que no les quedó más remedio que huir de un país en el que se empezaba a poner en marcha el Holocausto. De esta manera, Nabokov llegó a Estados Unidos, sumándose a la lista de otros escritores refugiados famosos que encontraron acogida en ese país como, por ejemplo, Bertolt Brecht y Thomas Mann. Jamás regresaría a Rusia.Las claves del genioVladímir Vladímirovich Nabókov nació el 22 de abril de 1899. Su padre y su abuelo estaban involucrados en partidos políticos liberales y tenían una posición económica acomodada. Desde muy pequeño fue trilingüe, ya que su familia hablaba en ruso, inglés y francés, lo que le facilitaría más adelante trabajar como traductor literario. Criado en una casa con muchos libros, desde muy joven cultivó una pasión por la palabra escrita y por la lectura.Su llegada a Estados Unidos se produjo en 1940, procedente desde Francia como muchos refugiados famosos de aquellos años. Para ese entonces, hacía mucho tiempo que había abandonado la lengua rusa y tenía al inglés como lengua principal, no solo para hablar sino también para escribir. De manera tal que su obra tiene un germen poco frecuente en un autor, ya que sus primeros textos fueron escritos en ruso (su lengua materna) pero las obras más importantes y con las que alcanzó el reconocimiento las escribió en inglés.La más reconocida, sin lugar a dudas, es Lolita, una historia muy controvertida para la época en la que fue publicada, en el año 1955. Narra la historia de Humbert Humbert, un profesor obsesionado con una niña llamada Lolita y sus derivas en coche por los Estados Unidos con ella y cargando consigo toda la culpa de un amor ilícito. No solo se trató de un libro polémico por el tema o las escenas descritas, sino también porque el autor decidió dar voz como narrador de la historia a este profesor pedófilo.Pese a la controversia, Lolita fue un bestseller inmediato y en muy pocos años fue traducida a muchos idiomas, convirtiéndose en un éxito comercial que le permitió a Nabokov abandonar el trabajo de docente en 1960 y poder vivir de la escritura. Al poco tiempo, siempre acompañado por su esposa Vera, abandonó Estados Unidos y se instaló en la ciudad suiza de Montreux, donde residió hasta su muerte, el 2 de julio de 1977.Como suele pasar con muchas figuras de la cultura en todo el mundo, recibió un homenaje tardío en su país natal, Rusia, en el centenario de su nacimiento. Fue durante 1999 cuando la ciudad de San Petersburgo acogió varios actos de homenaje al escritor, tanto en su casa natal como en diferentes escuelas que decidieron recuperar algunas de sus obras e incluirlas en los programas de estudio.
