Special projects students
work for credit in community

The Special Projects in Community
Service started as a pilot program in
the fall of 1970, Ms Jane \\'erneken
initiated it in her reading classes. She
asked the students if they would be
interested in helping the various
agencies in the community The
response was good and those involved
worked at places such as the Glendale
.-\du|t (‘enter They also helped to tutor
peopleintakingtheirG E.1') test Some
of these students worked at the Glen-
dale Day (‘tire (‘enter and still more[...]asxsting mt-n-
tally ret'ii'tled This first year the
program was non-credit

.\ls \\'crncken feels that there are
several reasons why the program is
good for the students They are per»
mitted to become involved[...]they can get
better acquainted with it. This way the
students will know whether they will
really enjoy working in that field or not.

For the student who is undecided as
to the field he would like to enter. this
program may give him some good
ideas The program also instills con-
fidence by letting th[...]n Special Projects in
t‘ommunity Service allows the students
to also understand the purpose of their
other college courses They can apply
their knowledge \thile working in the
mmmunity.

In the fall of 1971 the program
became part of the curriculum as an
elective The students receive credit
according to the number of hours
worked a week One credit is earne[...]. two credits are
earned by five hours a week and three
credits are recciied for working ten
hours a week The students report one

hour a week to a class which \ held on
'hiesday from St 35 until 10.35 and on
Wednesday from T to E p m

For the first four weeks of the
semester. .\ls Werneken has various
speakers talk to the class This allows
the students to become more familiar
with the program During this time the
students are urged to Visit With dif-
ferent agencies involved By Sept 25
they will have decoded which agency
they want and then begin their work
with it This choice is completely up to
the student

The grade for the semester is based
on both an evaluation and the one hour
seminar a week. The evaluation is
given by the supervisor in the agency
He is to evaluate the student's work and
progress throughout the semester, The
one hour seminar involves every
student in reporting his happenings and
feelings within the agency. He is to be
able to report both his succe[...]s in (‘ommunity
Service is proving its value to the
students and to the community. thinks

Student registration for the fall

marked increase over
registration during the same
period in 1971

As of Thursday, August 31. the
day registration showed 4060 as
compared to 3536 last year

The night registration also
showed an increase. 2855 com-
pared with 1971's 1625

During the spring semester of '72 a remark was made referring to the campus
newspaper as a "fish wrapper " Ms Barbara[...]f. quickly
tried to correct that myth by changing the format of the paper to what she thought
might be more appealing to the majority of students Having worked under her. I
personally felt that she was heading in the right direction While all this may be in
the past. 1 still believe that our goals have remained the same 7 to represent and

report all things connected with GCC

film review

High class tr[...]ce is shaped
for immediate audience reaction. And
the audience did seem to appreciate the
goings on up on the big silver. Laughs
were dispensed at appropriate[...]hing
better than an inspirational comedy ‘.‘

The line is maudlinly safe. with the
suds. in the name of realism, about to
engulf everyone in sight. A wonderful
little blind guy, in his early 20's. leaves
his plush cage in an exclusive Frisco[...]ma. an unenlightened
bitch. who. expecting to see the worst,
thinks she does She wants junior home.
After the big confrontation momma and
girlfriend reverse positions and all ends
unbelievably happy. Remember. this is
entertainment.

As momma. Eileen Heckart is
preserved from the original New York
production. Ms. Heckart's caust[...]roaty style.

Edward Albert Ison of Eddie» plays
the blidd youth He does well enough in
a t'dugh role. The difficulty is not per»
traying the blindness. but in making
likable a character devmd of any on
(baring qualities Despite his blind-
ness. the boy is surprisingly un-
sympathetic

True delight is Ms Goldie Hawn's
portrait of the kooky neighbor -
roommate. Frankovich can use Ms.
Hawn as box office insurance. and he‘s
right Nobody could dislike Goldie. Yet,
she is a touching actress. She has
played giddy little blondes in all of her
films. but she has it down so delight»
fully pat nobody cares Her sunny
personality shines all over the place.
This is not to discredit her acting
abilit[...]l she is a
serious actress i think I am in love.

Living serves 58 countries and has
involved more than 4.000 students.

The main objective of the program is

Gauchos ready
for ’72 season

“A competitor is one who learns to
take[...]their best and given 100 per cent when
they leave the field after it‘s all over.
then they really haven't lost.“

With a stress on this philosophy,
Coach Rollins and the Gauchos are set
for the 1972 football season. All in all,
Rollins feels very optimistic about the
coming season. With thirteen returning
men to anchor the team. it is also
deriving great strength from new
students and freshmen. according to
the head coach

“We have a lot of talent and plenty of
people to choose from. with almost
fifty~five players." The staff doesn't
mid a “cut" on the Glendale team.
unlike most other junior college teams
and four year teams

"We allow the boys to cut themselves.
The ones with the drive and willingness
to stick it out deserve as much of a
chance as anyone else, In my book. the
willingness of a person to extend
himself more than is expected is the
difference between mediocrity and just
plain good[...]s team is being geared to
two important factors »- agility and
mobility. With men like Steve Baily.
Bobby Haines and Ron Johnson in the
backfield and receivers such as Russell
Ellis and Steve Kreis. this may be the
difference between winning and losmg.

The quarterback position is still a

makings of good quarterbacks. The

noise. Karel Deleeuw discussed what he

('Ity. Kan . to play semivpro baseball.
During the cnttre summer he traveled
throughout most of the Midwest. At the
mil of the summer. his statistics came
out to be eight home[...]ll player

Illtlt’cuw began playing baseball at
the age of eight and from there his love
for lht‘ sport grew He played ba[...]High School and his

batting average went well in the 300
bracket
When Deleeuw entered Glendale he

disappointment because he did not play
all that much Finally. he got a chance
and Deleeuw go[...]last season's record:
eight home runs. which was the top of

the team. and a batting average of .368
which was the highest on the team.

What is a Ben Goo?

The movies

Devoid of any nostalgic va[...]pastiche of '30's
comedies. Bogdanovich brings it all
back; the visual and the verbal slap-
stick and the spoken zinger.

This updated farce has a nonsensical
twofold plot. The set up is the mixing
and matching of four identical over-
night bafi. The less incidental line
details the romance of Barbra
Streisand and Ryan O‘Neal, an absent
minded musicologist experimenting
with the relationship between primitive
man and the musical quality of igneous
rocks. Yes. that's right folks.

Here Ms, Streisand is at her comic
best.[...]calculated for
maximum efficiatcy. This is minor
work for “the superstar." The role
hardly taxes her dramatic prowess or
musical[...]matter. It is a
delight. We are also grateful for the
song and a half Ms. Streisand sings. La
Belle Barbra does a dynamite delivery
d Cole Porter's ”Your the Top" over
the credits. The fractional number is
“As Time Goes By," and let it suffice to
say you‘ll wish the whole number were
presented.

Ryan O‘Neal fans[...]pretty
obvious. In those now classic comedies
of the ’30's James Stewart and Cary
Grant could convin[...]tfully feverish
pitch in a climactic chase scene. The
film is always buzzing by and some
very old gags[...]me I got to beware..."

In the fuzzinoss of what happened last week. I failed to insert a notice iii the first
El Tiempo Pasando issue concerning the Arab guerilla attack on the Israeli
athletes. The notice was to express ETP's regrets at the slaying of the eleven

Israelis.

Maybe it wouldn‘t have had a[...]ny people, but it does have

something to do with all of us.

Thousand of athletes met in Germany to pa[...]ism took
precedence by force and by scheme, i.e.. the Rhodesian boycott.

What took place in Munich during the xx Olympiad had an immediate impact
on the rest of the world. Millions of people were disgusted and horr[...]ial kind of revenge. But revenge will not
restore the security in whichso many young representatives ga[...]ed; fear will run again competitive confidence in the future
unless we act soon to control such acts. It is not enough that we hear the sound of
gunfire or watch the number of dead increase with each terrorist attac[...]sound?
Everybody look what's goin‘ down..."

enjoy many of the verbal dillies.
especially when voiced by Ms.

but they are funny nonetheless. The
script by Buck Henry. David Newman.
and Robert Be[...]“original" story by Bogdanovich.
manages to mix the slapstick comedy
and the verbal humor in a perfect
blend Some of the sight gags are
overmilked. but that‘s minor.

attempting to expand their
organization of about 25 people. Their
membership ranges from conservative
to liberal. and socialist to anarchi[...].F.P.‘s
meetings are forum-centered. and
enable the individual to speak unhin-
dered by excessive parliamentary
procedure or other obstacles.

In the two years it has existed. S.F.P.
has aroused inte[...]Last year it
sponsored a Thanksgiving Dinner for
the needy (donating over 14 turkeys to
the event). and protested the use of
mpaim by threatening to use it against
a dog on the campus. Although never
conducted. the latter action was
sharply opposed by the student body,
and S.F.P. spokesmen denied the act to
be an official resolution of the club.

Ray Bat, temporary president of
S.F.P.. sa[...]wished to change certain campus
policies through the student govern-
ment. rather than an independent
group. Consequently. they focused their
attention on the “Associated Students“
rrganization. giving an enthusiastic
kick to the A.S,S. (Associated
Sophomore Studentst.

Forensics team plans
big, exciting year

The Glendale Community College
speech team wrapped up the 1971~72
season with a total of twenty-nine
major awards e[...]ive Speaking and Rhetorical
Analysis.

Throughout the year the team at-
tended six tournaments. The first was
hosted by Mesa College in Grand
Junction, Colo. where the Glendale
Team earned third place in total
sweepstakes points.

The November Matador Forensic
Festival was at Arizona[...]two
Glendale students in Oral In-
terprelation.

The state tournament in December
found a first place[...]eam
member.

Riverside College in California held
the Spring Invitational where the squad
ranked seventh among twenty-eight
participating colleges in total sweep-
stakes points.

The Dixie College Invitational in St.
George. Utah. w[...]s in Oral Interpretation and
Persuasive Speaking. The team was

AWS party held

The Associated Women Students
(AWS) held a fashion party Sept. 7 for
new women students. AWS sponsored
the get-together to acquaint the fresh-
men with the campus.

Speakers from various campus
organizations welcomed the women
and urged them to get to know their
fellow students and to participate in the
college's clubs.

Verbal invitations to join in student

government and the International’

Living program were made by AS[...]t Marcy Warner and Shirley
Baker. Representatives from the Honor
Board and the Women‘s Athletic and
Recreation Association also informed
the group of fall and spring activities.

Models from Plaza Three‘s ”Model's
Closet" presented a collection of
suggested clothing for college girls
ranging from smocks and body suits to
elephant - leg pants and maxi-dresses.

sweepstakes trophy.

in April the Glendale squad had the
honor of hosting the NJCSA - Phi Rho Pi
Regional Speech Championship.
Fourteen colleges were represented on
campus for the two-day event. Final
tournament results saw Glend[...]ionships in individual events and
second place in the sweepstakes.

The 1972-73 season has an exciting
and challenging schedule of tour-
namenm being planned. The season will
open with the Citrus Open Forensic
Meet at Mesa Community College on
October 13 and 14. After that the squad
will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. for
the Madcap Forensic Festival on Nov.
10 and 11. The Southern California area
is being charted as the site for Glen-
dale's third major speech tournament
of the year. The squad will attend a
tournament in that area sometime in
early December.

scheduled

The Department of Aerospace
Studies IAFROTC) at ASU has an-
nounced the fall semester schedule for
the administraion of the Air Force
Officer Qualification Test (AFOQTL

St[...]g junior college who
are planning toattend ASU in the future
and are interested in enrolling in the
two-year Air Force ROTC Com-
missioning Program a[...]test in order to determine their
qualifications,

The two-year program gives a
transfer student the opportunity to
receive his Air Force Commission in
two years rather than the normal four
years,

The test will be administered on
September 16. October 21 and
November 18 at 7:30 am. in Room 333.

Anyone interested in taking the AFOQT

The test is free and students may take

collaborative production of “fiddler On
The Roof."

“Fiddler", now the longat running
musical in the history of Broadway,
would be prsented as the joint effort of
the drama and music departments.

The series begins with “Arsenic and
Old Lace" on Thursday, Oct. 5. The
show will be playing the boards for five
performancs.

pictures at their meetings?

These were the questions that were
asked and answered at the hearing over
the controversial “artichoke
movement“ at Scottsdale Community
College.

Judge Glenn upheld the decision of
the administrators. ruling that the
artichoke and "pink and white" for the
school mascot and colors would not
stand

Here is the story in a nutshell: SCC is
a new campus. and. as all new cam-
puses were Without mascot or colors.
Executive Dean Donaldson called for a
general election of the student body. At
first. the students all voted on less
athletic activity as they felt too[...]laced on afliletics and
not enough on academics. The ad-
ministration vetoed this vote. and said
there would be athletics. Now a vote

was to be taken on what the student
body wished to have as their mascot
and school colors. The artichoke and
"Pink and White" were chosen.

Dean Donaldson again vetoed the
vote. calling the student's actions
“ridiculous" and “degrading[...]blue and white
athletic equipment.

This incensed the students to such a
degree. that they hired a lawyer and
filed a suit against the school in court.

favor of the administrators. and said. in

The movies

The age of the big empty Hollywood
spectacular is not over. at least not for
Sam S igel “Nicholas and Alexan-
dra" is not the long awaited savior.

The film never comes alive. Franklin
Schaffner‘s di[...]in storage. like it was a casual
Sunday stroll up the Nevsky Prospect.
The actors. with only a few exceptions.
never rise above the level of cardboard
cutouts in Las Vegas hotel lobbies,

The chief strength of Robert K.
Masstc's bestseller, on which the film
was based. was the meticulous at»
tentinn paid to detail. James Goldman's
screenplay never produces the
engrossing minutiae utilized in
Massic‘s massive work. It is impossible
to apply this quality to film.[...]orks
in these panoramic films.

History has taken the edge off the
line's suspense. but Schaffner and
Goldman never convey the historical or
social importance of the events taking
place In those few fateful years the
direction of humankind changes
course A complete[...]n end and a new era was ushered in. In
this piece the curtain comes down with
barely a whimper.

Breaks in the lethargy are rare. but
Janet Suzman as Alexandra is fine. Ms.
Stizman is stunning. portraying both
the spoiled bitch and defeated wife and
mother

Students and the budget

It is apparent that the athletic budget is once again an issue for the Marioopa
County Community Colleges. While not saying yet whether it is right or wmrg, i
assume that those people who are compl[...]ear. as in others. many students complained about the division of student
money in this area. As a reporter then. i was assigned to cover the budget
meetings held at the end of second semata. What seemed strange to me is that
those people who cried the loudest were very seldom there. Explanations later on
led me to believe that they had been eaten by the red tape of bureaucracy, lost
somewhere along the way through run-around phone calls. or pressured by exam

time.

This semester 1 received a report from the Maricopa County Community College
District outlining the faculty and student role at Governing Board meeti[...]nts and faculty members who are dissatisfied with the budget
are willing to confront the upper ranks. then this information should be useful to

them:

“The following recommendations to the Governing Board were accepted June

l2. [972:

a. That the presidents of the districtAwide faculty association be the official
representatives of the faculty at the Board meetings.

b. That any Student Body Presidents in attendance be the official represen-
tatives of their respective Campuses at the Board meetings.

c. That items of business pertaining to the faculty be submitted to the precidatt's
office for consideration and inclusion in the agenda.

d. That items of business pertaining to the student body of any Campus be
submitted through the Office of the Executive Dean for consideration and sub-
mission to the President for agenda inclusion.

e. That the representativa of those groups, and others that may be determined.
will be seated in the Represaitativos Row. and their presence made known to the

President of the Board. and

f. That these representatives. like the administrative officials of the district and
the campuses. must be recognized by the President in order to address the Board."

What this really means is that there is now a systematic and somewhat ex-
perimental way to reach the higher-ups. Whether it is a good way to let the
Governing Board know what you're really thinking[...]d's idea of spectacle. Though
shot abroad. it has the unmistakable
stamp of Hollywood all over it. For once
film makers have not blown events out
of proportion; instead they have
miniaturized the spectacle.

Department. a shortage of space and
equipment are the primary reasons for
not being able to accept more students,

start last week by announcing that

held today

The Veterans Administration will be
holding a Job Fair today, Sept. 22.
from to am. until 5pm. It will be
held in the Colonnade and Arcade
Rooms of the Ramada Inn at 3801 East
Van Buren. It is being sponsored by the
joint efforts of the Governor's Jobs for
Veterans Task Force. the City of
Phoenix. Luke Air Force Base and
Williams Air Force Base.

The Vice-President and General
Manager of Mountain Bell. L. B. Jolly.
is also the Task Force chairman. He
stated that the purpose of the fair is to
bring the employers and veterans of the
community and soon-to—be servicemen

Haines shines despite loss

’The Glendale football team went to
Palomar. Calif. looking forward to
taking the rubber match of their series
of games (each team[...]'ve tied once). But hopes don't win
ball games.

The Gauchos led throughout the
game. and held a 14—12 lead at the
beginning of the fourth quarter. But.
according to Coach Rollins, the
Palomar team simply outlasted them in
the fourth quarter.

"They have lots of size and lots[...]le in and out so
that there were fresh players in all the
time, whereas most of our men went
both ways for most of the game. It was
very evident in the fourth quarter.

“We didn't. however, make as m[...]beautiful football. They just
couldn‘t last for the whole game. and
this was definitely the deciding factor. "

There were some bright spots in the
dark gloom of Palomar. however. Bob
Haines. the No. 1 running back for GCC
had 135 net yards rushing. along with 2

What is WARA?

WARA is the Womens' Athletic and
Recreation Association.

women which is similar to that of the
men‘s intramural program." says Miss
Nelda Knapp, director of the program
at GCC.

There is also a program in which the
women schedule various sports ac-
tivities with other schools.

The current activity in the in-
tercollegiate phase is volleyball. There
will be two teams at GCC. an “A" team
and a "B" team.

The teams practice Monday through
Thursday from 3'5 in the afternoon.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the “A” team
was invited to participate in an in-[...]am scored its first meet victory last
Saturday at the Long Beach In-
vitational held in that city.

Athletic budget blasted

What would yo[...]03 car. 0r buy a new quadrophonic
stereo system.

The Gaucho football team found a great way to spend j[...]or
their first game against Palomar at San Diego. the team flew over on Hughes Air
West and spent $400 worth in meals and lodging and miscellaneous. The price tag
for the plane ride cost $1600.

"I felt it was worth it." remarked Coach Rollins. “When you spend all day riding
on a bus to the game. spend overnight and ride all the way back the next day. you
end up with a lot of tired players who have practice again the next day.“ Rollins
maintained that it was a time saver and did away with a good deal of wearand-
tear on the players.

The Associated Student officers carried an opposing view. when AS treasurer
Mark Krnieciak received the two requisitions. he refused to sign them on the
grounds that it wasn‘t fair to the rest of the students or the other athletic teams on
campus. In a memo attached to the requisitions. Kmieciak made known he
reasons for[...]massive expense that should not be leveled up on the
students‘ activity budget. We also do not feel that the team should fly when others
must take the bus or other means of transportation." He also ad[...]ove any requisitions that will degrade and
demean the students.“

Both requisitions were pushed throu[...]ure. What
many students are wanting to know is if the football team was worthy of receiving
so much money. The AS officers now feel that they have no control over the budget.

A decision made by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Jerry H. Glenn has
made all this possible. Before this decision. a directive adopted by the Maricopa
County Community College District (MCCCD[...]is mostly activity fees. cannot be spent without the signature
of the designated student officer. Judge Glenn overturne[...]hich stated that athletic expenditures are
exempt from the required student officer signature. Whether this[...]) can push through anything they want now without the officers
signing any requisitions."

Where do we go from here’.’ The Associated Student Body has already endorsed
the Scottsdale Community College conflict. But endor[...]not enough to solve a problem that is growing by the day. The issue must be settled
by an EQUALLY BENEFICIAL PL[...]h it is true that good crowds are turning out for the home football gama.
does that designate the right for the athletic department to ask for more than what
is[...]commend them on their use of homegrown talent
for the team. but does that allow them to loosen the purse strings?

We think not. Two thousand dollars could do some good for the other depart-

The movies

Stanley Kubrick's X-rated assault on
our senses and sensibilities. “A Clock-
work Gange." has finally arrived in
Phoenix. It is now[...]certain.

Director Kubrick's terrifying vision of
the future is technically brilliant. The
camera work and editing are tops.
However. no amount of technical vir-
tuosity can give a film the emotional
appeal it desperately needs. Hollywood
knows this better than anyone. “Clock—
work" is cold Kubrick never crosses the
bridge between audience and screen.
despite the continual viewer bom-
bardment. The dramatic power of a
"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woo " is
missing. The Mike Nichols film left the
viewer emotionally wasted. It went as far
as to physically drain the audience When
"Virginia Woolf" was shown at ASU last
week. the audience la“! in stimned
silence. No such reaction at the Kachina.
Audience participation does not even
descend to the rah rah cheering for good
and boo boo booing for bad level.

One reason for this is that all three
forces. and there are three. not the
traditional two. are so repellent any
cheering is rendered impossible. The
right wing forces. the left wing forces and
a directional criminal element are all
without any redeeming features. All are
repulsive. Kubrick attacks and ridicules
all SIdES. but he offers no alternatives.
Kubrick's pessimistic view of the future
is Without hope.

The story takes place in the near
future. Young Alex and his band of
delinquents go raping. looting, and
murdering with wild abandon. The
drawing card is the violence. In a series
of double crosses Alex is b[...]be a guinea pig in a project
designed to wipe out all violent ten-
dencies among the criminally insane. A
programming program is insti[...]n thoughts of violence and or sex
enter his mind. The therapy proves to be
a perfect pacification progr[...]ely has music
been med more effectively in film. From
a large collection of Beethoven to Gene
Kelly‘s rendition of “Singing in the
Rain", music has never been more
important.

The artistic merits of “A Clockwork
Orange" are many. All aspects of
direction. technique and camera work
are exceptional. It is. however.
emotionally unto[...]enough there are a great
majority of students on the GCC campus
who aren‘t aware of the facilities
available to them in connection with the
Instructional Materials Center (IMCI.
When the word library is mentioned the
image is formed of the spinster librarian.
complete with bunned hair and[...]is much more that
just a building where a copy of "The Old
Man and the Sea" can be found.

For example, if you wanted the June
16. 1969 issue of Time Magazine or
perhaps yesterday‘s copy of the Wall
Street Journal where would you go'?

wouldn't know exactly where to go. Of
course the IMC would be the place to
start. But more specifically. the
Periodicals r' Microfilm Room would be
where that information and much more
would be found.

The Periodicals Microfilm Room
located in the IMC has an abundant
supply of materials in the form of

mi[...]is a wide variety of periodicals on
store ranging from Time, Newsweek.
and US. News and World Report to[...]are
covered by trade journals such as
Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
Amerimn Journal of Nursing. and

Surprising what you can find in the library

issues of local papers such as the Arizona
Republic and the Phoenix Gazette are
kept as well as the New York Times. Los
Angeles Times. Wall Street Journal and
many more. If you miss the comics one
day at least you'll know where you can go
to catch up on the antics of “Beetle
Baily."

Both magazines and n[...]materials out for overnight use.

Older isues of the more popular
newspapers and magazines are kept on[...]en a Reader Printer machine which
can make copies from microfilm at a cost
of 15c a sheet for those stud[...]rs I might have hated him (a
private school bratl right back.

Yet. watching “Wallace and Co.“ since
the impressionable age of nine. I fell in
love. They[...]ng like him in
Waterloo. Iowa.

A star in his own right. after 12 years
on Channel 5. Gerald really “turned me
on.

When Gerald danced gracefully across
the colorful show set in an attempt to give
some class to us “uncultured creeps" in
the audience I was ecstatic. Sure. I knew
I was an un[...]th Love" in his best
Nelson Eddie voice I swooned — he had
Hub Kapp and the Wheels all beat to hell.

But. when I went frantic with ex-
citement over Gerald's volunteering to
show “The Life Cycle of the Earthworm"
as-a replacement for cartoors my mother
became worried.

She suggested I read a biography of
Adolph Hitler in an attempt to flu[...]eamed approval at his every
breath Dumb Iadmo was the hero of all
the “morons" in the audience f I
thought he was a klutz.

My lifetime[...]broke out in adolescent pimples.

When I met him. all dressed in his
maroon velvet play suit and knee s[...]ranted.

I was supposedly there for an interview
— he called me "Mrs. Pufliam." but I
was so infatu[...]found it impossible to write.

He'll never know the interview was
technically unsuccessful though.
because. according to Gerald, “I'll never
read your crummy. low-budget
newspaper Mr. Pulliam comes to my
house personally every morning and
gives me the news over English muf-
fins."

Petersons enchanted by Ceylon wildlife, c[...]oon forget. accordirg to
Willis Peterson. head (i the GCC
Photography Department. He told this
story among others in a recent interview.
The elephant episode happened during
the realization of a boyhood dream. a
visit. this pas[...]phy is a bit hazy.
Ceylon is an island country in the Indian
Ocean. south and east of India. It is 271
miles long 137 miles in width at its
widest part and is about the size of the
state of West Virginia. In the two months
that he was there. he traveled. by jee[...]e a
very fascinating and picturesque
country, and the people friendly. proud.
accommodating and religio[...]grapher having taken
nature and wildlife pictures from Alaska
to Baja. He has had articles and pictures[...]est books and Time—Life
books to name a few. At the present time
15 of his prints are hanging in the
Eastman Kodak galleries in New York
City. His trip to Ceylon was the result of
negotiations with a well-known national[...]of birds. wildlife, plants and
scenic wonders of the country. He and his
wife. Roberta. left New York aboard a
Boeing 747 Super Jet the last of May and
returned to the United States in August.
The 20-hour trip. halfway around the
world. going was against the sun and “it
sure was a long night,“ Peterson[...]fferent." he
continued. “We were traveling with the
sun and it was mostly daylight. It seemed
we were[...]dinner. then dinner and
then afterdinner snacks. The two things
that impressed me most, however. was
the size and power of that airplane. You
just can't i[...]people on an
airplane until you‘ve seen it. And the
power I've ridden in airplanes before
but I never felt the thrust on takeoff
like you feel the thrust on a 747. You are
very aware of the tremendous power this
plane has.“

Western mixed with the Far East. The
caste system was very prevalent.

Ceylon only tailor made. because it is
beneath the dignity of the upper class to
wear or make anything but tailor m[...]found a critical lack of foreign
exchange, which the country is trying to
improve. but it is difficult[...]ed
that a side effect of his story and pictures
d the country will stimulate more tourist
visits to the country.

Peterson described the tropical
climate as being very mild. pleasant and
healthful. The food was good and well
prepared and the service in restaurants
was over-whelming. "You had a waiter
to bring you water. one to bring the main
course. one to clear off the table and one
that constantly would clear or clean off
the crumbs or other items on the table
You don‘t find this kind of service over
here.

“We learned to like the food although it
is very hot and spicy They prepare and
at a very minimum amount of meat.
The staple food is rice. and there is very
little obesity among the people. This is
attributed to their diet. The Indian curry
is very hot with spices. It makes our
Mexican food seem like an ice cream
dessert." he said.

The people dress Westem during
business hours but revert to the in
digenous dress for evening or official
functions. The women are very graceful
and beautiful in their lo[...]had many interesting and exciting
experiences in the short time that he was
in the country. The most exciting of
which was a charge by a wild ele[...]and her month-old calf
were drinking at a pond in the jungle
when a crocodile seized the little one and
[milled it under the water. resulting in
drowning it. When the mother saw what
was happening she came to the rescue.
but it was too late. The little one was
already dead.

Peterson. his Wife and the native guide
happened on the scene about this time.
They saw the mother try to revive the
little one but to no avail. He
photographed this for about 30 minutes
and finally the mother trumpeted and
went back into the jungle. She apparently
associated the death of her off—spring
with Peterson and his party. She circled
their position and came charging. out of
the jungle, behind them. They made a
wild scramble for the jeep and made it to
safety with no injuries

Petersen did lose his light meter when
gettinginto the jeep and it is still there in
the jurgle smashed flat by the enraged
dephant. He said. “When you look up in
the sky and there's that big elephant

about 25 feet away. with the trunk up and
trumpeting. it's the biggest thing you‘ we
ever seen and it ’s a tremendous,
terrifying experience to have one
trumpet right in your ear."

lie viSIted the Sky Kingdom. an anCient
ruins. which was a rock fortress. 500 feet,
high and built in 1200 AD. by the ancient
(‘elenese kings. The only way into the
fortress now is by steel ladders imbedded
in the sheer walls leading up to the ruins.
It was built complete with temples,
fountains. and swimming pools. Thev
kings had frescoes painted on the sides of
the cliffs and mountains and some of
these are still visible and well preserved.
Peterson is probably the first
photographer to photograph these
frescoes. The architecture of the temples
was beautiful and when one considers the
period in which they were built, it was an
except[...]Another interesting experience was
taking part in the annual Buddhist
pilgrimage This is a two~day worship
and is held at a shrine that is the original
location where Buddha is supposed to
have existed. The shrine is located on a
mountain that is about 700 to 800 feet.
high. Some 100.000 to 200,000 people took
part in the celebration. It is custom and
tradition that every one wears white and
walk. barefooted. up the side of the
mountain to the shrine.

Peterson was impressed by the fact'
that the people left the area in excellent
condition after spending two da[...]icate that that many people had spent
two days in the area

He described the dense thick jungles
and indicated that they were very hard to
penetrate, There are no tigers in the
country but there are leopards. He did
manage to[...]m although
this was hard as they only come out in the
late evening hours or the early morning
and the light is very poor for pictures.

There are also wild water buffaloes in
the country and these are thought to be
the most dangerous as they are so un-
predictable The[...]stated
that hedid not get an exact measurement
of the hood for obvious reasors.

The country is a small country and the .-
people make use of everything. There is
very little waste and very little poverty
because the people can and do live off the
land In his opinion Ceylon is an en-
chanting and[...]re and wildlife.

new motto for their 1972 campaign. It's
called "generosity on the gridiron".

For the second week in a row. Glendale
literally gave the game away with two
costly mistakes as the Mavericks of
Mesa ('ollege of Colorado blanked the
Gauchos H-O last Saturday night.

Km in Fellows. a 1971 graduate of Agua
Fria High School. is the number five
runner on the Gaucho cross country

Kevin is the son of Lt Colonel lretiredi
and Mrs Francis J. Fellows. Because of
his military affiliations. Kevin has had
the chance to see many things and places

the top. and in his senior year. he placed

line. Gendale fumbled and the Mavericks
pounced on the loose ball. One play later.
Mesa signal-caller. Mike Pry. scored on
a plunge through the middle of the
Gaucho defensive line. Steve Bauer
kicked the extra point to give the
Mavericks a 70 lead.

Glendale controlled the ball throughout
most of the second quarter but failed to
score

With Mesa owrung a seven pomt lead.
the Gauchos displayed their motto again.
this time with 53 seconds remaining in

Mavericks all night and once again they
stopped the Mesa offense for four
straight downs from within the three
yard line.

for wrestling

Glendale is fortunate to have a top
wrestler on the team. last year, Stevens
won the Regional Champion. A Regional

states Colorado. Utah. and Arizona.

School. Stevens has been wrestlin[...]d in state.

“I enjoy wrestling. because I like the
mmpetition." Stevens commented.

Eric got interested in wrestling from
his brothers Naturally. his brothers
introduced him to the sport and from
there. his attraction to the sport grew.

Being a top wrestler can be rewarding.
but it takes a lot of work. During the up-

The El Tiempo Pasando retains a very small official[...]t out a good weekly when you have to double up on work. But fortunately we
have-some very talented young[...]This special campaiyi issue is a fine example of the caliber of journalism we strive to
achieve. Altho[...]s among ourselves. we generally agreed that
since the legal emancipation of young people had come to pass. the national elections
would be more important than ever. With the candidates campaigns gaining
momentum. we decided[...]ude to staff writer Steve Allnatt who slaved over the typewriter to get all
his material in.

The information about the candidates and their various platforms was tremendous
and had to be sifted for both the good and the bad. This. needless to say. had to be done
in order to gain an overall picture of the issues involved and touch on all the important

Last week i was invited[...]ilm for Paramount
Pictures (finally a freebie! ). The film is
based on John Knowles bestseller of the
early '60'5. “A Separate Peace,“ The
film is scheduled to officially open at the
El Camino in Scottsdale sometime in
November.

The film tells of two boys in a New
England prep school during World War
ll.

At the risk of leaving mvself open to
charge of criticism. I must say the film is
a failure. It is too bad. because it is a[...]. heavy-
handed. snickering piece of pretension.

The chief strength of Knowles's novel
is the detailed introspection of Gene. the
mainliner. This is impossible to convey in
film[...]g voice»
overs. And then it would no longer have
the movement needed for film.

The action and dialogue are faithful to
the book-too faithful. Fred Segal‘s
screenplay comes out as a sketchy,
almost panoramic synopsis of the book.
The work was not well adapted to its new
medium.

Larry Pe[...]ual scene well
enough. However. he cannot replace the
sketchiness of plot with the unifying
central theme Gene‘s introspection
pro[...]ong shots used to signify
emotion-contemplation,

The acting company consists of young

A truce has been called in the struggle
between the Maricopa County Com-
munity College District and the five
community colleges that are in that
district[...]was called Oct. 10 by
Spenser Smart. President of the National
Organization for College Veterans. to try
to work out a settlement. Dr. John F.
Prince. MCCCD President. met with
Associated Student officers from
Glendale. Phoenix. Maricopa and
Scottsdale community colleges. State
Sen. Fred Koory. who works in the
educational section of the Senate. also
attended the meeting.

The five campuses will begin a series
of meetings to review and evaluate
student constitutions. The recom»
mendations that come out of these
meetings will be presented to the
Governing Board for formal approval.
Sudent governments set up for the
spring semester will operate under the
revised constitutions.

In an official release the ad-
ministration agreed with the AS officers
to cease any related action on any
campus at this time,

Specifically. the administration will
“drop any pending action on any campus
against student body officers at this
time."

The release also stated that the student
body presidents and the district
president will work cooperatively to
"achieve the stated goal of this project;
that any chargm or actions. real or
threatened. toward the District will not
be taken."

The mom is staffed by students who
want to gain experience in the field of
counseling. They also provide in-
formation about other agencies in the
Valley or on campus in case there is a

welcomed to help staff the rap room
chring its regular hours of Monday
through Thursday and at the Friday
seminar from 11 to 12.

together some unique sounds.

When the music of Steve Foreman
happened on to the recording scene (in
the form of Eclectic Mouse) 8 lot of
eyebrows were raised. That’s just about
ALL that happened. Although it had an
interesting and unique effect on the
listener. most people couldn't handle it
beyond its curiosity. After joining forces
with the jazz-rock Buffalo. Foreman
toured the country and is once again
making headway.

Goosec[...]and rock that fans of both are
well-pleased with the combination. After
doing some Southern touring,
Goosecreek returns to round out the bill
for tonight. Country~western singer
Willie Nelson replaces Waylon Jennings
for tonight.

All these very unique sounds emerged
from experimenting and combining. It
will be interesting to see if their diversity
will miteor divide--the Phoenix
audience.

“In 1964 McGovern was[...]m
while most politicians were still
discussing ‘The Negro Problem‘
IComing of Age With McGovern. by
Gloria Steinem, Ms. magazine. 10 72).

Senator McGovern announced, that as
president. he would reform FHA housing
assistance programs. so that the people
who need it the most (“the poor blacks")
would receive the aid directly.

McGovern also said that the federal
government should pay 1 3 the cost of
elementary and high school education.

In an attempt to combat unem-
ployment the South Dakota senator is
sponsoring the Public Service Em-
ployment Act of 1972. This bill is designed
to manufacture 1.15 million jobs for
unemployed and underemployed
Americans. The funding of this measure
would eventually cost the federal
government $10 billion annually.

The Senator also advocates broad
sweeping tax reform. Ability to pay and
the closing of corporate tax loopholes
would be the criteria used in restruc-
turing the tax structure.

In a general policy statement.

supports the enforcement of laws
preventing the commercial sale of the
weed. but private use would be made a
misdemeanor.

Concerning abortion. McGovern feels
that the federal government has no
business interfering. The Senator has

Sexual Freedom plank installed in the
party's policy platform:

"The Democratic party is opposed to
government interference in the
reproductive and sexual freedom of the
individual American citizen."

McGovern liked the wording and
promised to get back with her on it.

He never did. Delegate Shirley
MacLaine led a "drop the plank" move.
Even if a principle had to be sacrificed.
MacLaine said. they had to protect
McGovern from issues that may cost
votes.

Steinem and the Feminists were
dismayed when the plank was axed.
Tearfully angered. shouting ”bastards"
at the McGovern lieutenants. Steinem
was led from the floor It seemed the
aides and confidantes were now running
the McGovem drive for the presidency.

1000 per cent behind Eagleton. A week
later the vice-presidential candidate was

Shriver has greatly added to the ticket.
He's added a touch of glamor and ex-

unrelenting attacks on the present ad-
ministration has given the McGovern
campaign a much needed push. He‘s

And it IS an attack. The campaign

president, the Republican congressman
explained that he was loyal to the party.
Schmitz often repeats that he is for

He is a good party man and according to
the conservative Californian Richard
Nixon is not.

In Memphis. Schmitz conducted a 73-
minute blast at Nixon. the communists.
the Supreme Court. school busing. cuts in
defense spe[...]er he does not feel that
President Nixon is among the
backslidden. Schmitz feels that Nixon

“according to a poll. 70 per cent of the
people think President Nixon is a
moderate Conser[...]t Schmitz says that Nixon “is
totalitarianizing the country faster than
any President ever has."

Wallace launched his drive for the
presidency in 1968. Yet. Schmitz has not

Last week. however. the press
speculated that after a visit from Spiro
Agnew. Wallace would indeed officially
endorse Richard Nixon.

Schmitz received the AIR
nomination when Alabama Governor
George Wallace refused the spot. “Ac»
tually." says Schmitz. "We aren‘t a third
party. We‘re the second party. The
Republicans and the Democrats are only
differing wings of the American Socialist
party."

Schmitz continues his argument. “The
two parties have given you a choice
betwee[...]ow. One man is endorsed
by Peking and Moscow. and the other
man is endorsed by Hanoi and the
Manson family.“

John G. Schmitz was born in
Milwaukee. Wisconsin on Aug. 12. 1930.
In 1962. he graduated from Marquette
University. He then entered the US
Marine Corps. where he served as an
aviator fo[...]s.

In 1960. Schmitz received his master's
degree from California State. He was
then employed by Santa A[...]nce. He also taught a course
in anti-communism at the El Trro
Marine Corps Air Station. He is still an

ln 196-1. Schmitz entered politics. His
first campaign w[...]ssemblyman
Bruce Sumner, and later went on to win
the seat. He was reelected in 1966.

In June 1900. Schmitz was elected to
finish the term of the late James Utt.
That November. Schmitz was reelected
for a full term. He won by 68 per cent of
the vote. It was the largest majority
given any Congressional candidate that
year.

Schmitz. a member of the John Birch
Society. introduced a bill in Congress
which would get the 11.5. out of the United
Nations He believes that the UN. was
founded by Communists to propagate the

Schmitz also introduced HR. 6790. a
bill “which would remove all present
restrictions on the ownership. buying and
selling of gold by American citizens..."
The fact that Americans do not have this
option. says Schmitz. "a right respected
by nearly every other free country in the

of individual liberty ever imposed on the
American people.“

Schmitz also introduced a bill that
would not allow the federal courts
Jurisdiction to order school bising.
Following the same line. H.R. bill 6501.
also presented by Schmitz. would take all
cases involving welfare eligibility. drug

schools and appeals of criminal cases in
the state courts. involving pre—trial
procedure out of the federal courts.

Schmitz announced that with a little
help from the press he could poll more
votes than McGovern. He feels that the
press is not his biggest ally. “For awhile.
one of the best-kept secrets the media
had was that l was running for

clout

Richard Milhous Nixon was elected the
37th president of the United States in
1968. After four years of the Republican's
leadership. Nixon is running for re»
election.

At this point in the mmpaign. Nixon's
poll lead over George McGovern is an
astonishing 39 points (as of Sept. 12).
Though the gap is expected to close some
before election the race is generally
conceded to the President.

Thus. President Nixon. safe behind the
incumbent white walls of the Executive
Mansion. has entered the race almost in

absentia. His campaign is very low key.
Though he is expected to join the re-
election forces later in the campaign. his
personal active involvement has been
limited.

In his stead those around the President
are out spreading the Republican word.

Pat Nixon. now the most traveled First
Lady in history. is making the rounds. No
longer is Ms. Nixon “plastic Pat."

politician to the manner born. She is not

Eisenhower are all doing their thing for
Nixon.

Vietnam was the biggat issue in the
campaign. It was also Democrat George
McGovem's strong point. Nixon seems to
have snatched the political advantage
right out from under the South Dakotan's
nose.

With a 500 thousand troop[...]ourth day
of secret (at least private) talls with the
North Vietnamese. and with rumors of a
near peace all over the place. Nixon
seems safe from the heaviest McGovern
barrages.

ln Jan. 1969. when the President took
office. 549 thousand men were stationed
in Vietnam. The US military presence is
now estimated at 39 thousand troops.

1n1969 the war cost $22 billion. In 1972 it
is expected that $15 billion will be
chopped from that amount.

With Vietnam no longer the potent
point maker McGovern once thought it
was. he has turned to what is now called
the Watergate Scandal.

The Watergate Scandal refers to the
attempted break in and bugging of the
Democratic headquarters. The alleged
spies were supposedly operating on in
structions from the Committee for the
Re<election of the President.

According to Pat Nixon. the Watergate
Affair “has been blown oompletelyout[...]er admits
lcnowing no more than what she reads in
the paper. After a series of denials an

Republican feedback. Republicans
consider the South Dakotans' rhetoric as

other candidate.“

McGovem‘s only other substantial
attack of the Prsident involve the
economy-unemployment and in-

per cent. The rate of inflation is now
hoverirg somewhere around three per
cent. according to the Committee to Re-
elect the President.

The program utilized to combat in

The Republican administration set a
record high employment total. with 81.2
million Americans employed That
number showed a yearly gain of 2.8
million workers.

The president also announced that he
wants a revision of the minimum wage
system to benefit the young and inex-

pansive budget policy to stimulate
private industry and create more jobs.

Even though the club has 1,335

hang. The squad attended the Citrus
Open lnvitatiorial Speech Toumament
hosted by Mesa College on Oct. 13 and 14

decision on quality points, the judges
awarded first place to Debbie whose

Athletics under attack[...]spendings are once again
under attack Debating on the issue are
the strident body presidents from Scott-
sdale. Glendale. and Phoenix Com»

presidents, they are not opposed to
athletics. but they are opposed to the
money which goes to the academic
departments.

The pity ofthe situation is that the GCC
Student government is making false
assumptions They are assuming that the
majority of the students are against the
athletic budget (approximately $51,000
goes toward athletics out of a total
budget around $130,000)

Has the students government bothered
to find out how the majority of the
students really feel? Or, are they basing

titude toward athletics.

Consider this. About 250 athletes
(excluding those who participate in in-
tramurals and those who are cut while

considered are the spectators who watch

' downs New Mexico Military

It's called ”puttin it all together,"

That's what the Glendale Gauchos did
last Saturday night as they trounced New
Mexico Military by a convincing 41-14
score in picking up their first win of the
season.

For head coach Carl Rollins. victory
was sweet. The win not only ended a four-
game Gaucho losing str[...]first four
games. She had her opponents beaten in
all four contests but costly mistakes
marked her defeat.

The Gaucho offense, behind sophomore
fullback Steve B[...]ble.
They dealt New Mexico a physical
beating and the game was literally over
in the second quarter.

The highlight was Baily, Steve. who
tsually goes crazy on the field anyway.
enjoyed his best performance of the
season thus far by doing what he does
best, rippi[...]ards
nishing and scored two touchdowrs on
runs of 2'] and 1 yards.

Baily. as well as the entire Glendale
dfensive line. also pmvided some[...]alfback Ron Johrson for
a 38 yard scoring pass in the third
quarter to put the game out of reach for
Glendale. Tailback Jerry Davis, filling in
for the injured Bob Hainos (sidelined
with a shoulder separation), also enjoyed
his best performance of the season
nishing for 96 yards and scoring a two
point conversion.

It wasn't all offense for Glendale as the
Gaucho defense gave up only second and
fourth quarter touchdowns and held the
b.0ncos to a mere 30 yank on the
ground.

A 180 yarit in penalties prevented the
Gauchos from making the game a rout.
The victory by Glendale marked the
fourth time this season that New Mexico

traveled to Hoy Field for a conference
game with the Phoenix College Bears.

Phoenix entered the game with a 34)
record and a ranking of 6 in NJCAA
ratings. But it was the Gauchos who
played like they were undefeated and
ranked sixth in the nation among junior
colleges

Glendale completely dominated the
game. both offensively and defensively.
through the first three and a half quar-
ters. The Gauchos opened the scoring the
first time they touched the ball and held
the Bears scoreless until midway in the
final period.

Each year school changes in many
capaci[...]as
established a pattern. Every year it has
taken the same course. always for the
worse. This change is in student interst.

The interest of the students in school
activities is forever declining. in fact, the
entire atmosphere is that of Iifelessness
By three in the afternoon. most of the
students have left to continue their ac-
tivities elsewhere. Parking lots, which
are jungles during the early morning,
look more like a desert floor by a[...]interest exist?
Who's to blame? Is it because of the ladr
of organizations or activities? Not likely.
To be more specific. there are at least 20
different clubs ranging from the
Automotive Club to Students For
Progress. Then. i[...]n why
is campus life dying". Perhaps it is due to
the lack of publicity. This could be the
answer this year since no one is willing to
be the publicity chairman for Glendale.
but this does not explain the lack of in-
terest in the past.

Because of this lack of student interest,[...]ame extremely close to being cancelled.
Possibly. the ‘73-74 school year will have
to go without 3 Homecoming for the first
ame since Glendale's beginning. And
those w[...]ntent. they may search
for a new school as well.

The answer to our problem is simple
and sour. No one individual or group is
responsible for the lack of promotion of
school activities. Everyone shares the
responsibility, But the one group that is
most responsible for the failure of
student life are the students themselves.
For the students must be willing to take
part in school activities. If the student is
interested, he or she will make an eff[...]us life and
what they can do to promote interest.
From the short while I have been here
I've yet to see this happen.

Save the student life. Take some time
to realize where your interest lies and
then seek to fulfill your interest right
here at Glendale College.

Apathy can only exist[...]wild forest fire.
Help us control and extinguish the flame

Plea for auditorium

The recent lecture - demonstration recital by Jose Greco and his leadi[...]n't have an auditorium.

It ‘s not just a shame — it's embarrassing. Jose Greco, a world artist, struggled
to talk over the noisiness of people walking up and down basketbal[...]her best to dance on a small raised stage. After the show,
Greco commented that those of us who felt w[...]n him for support.

Our drama department squeezes all of its productions into the T-Il building.
Inadequate doesn‘t even begin to describe the situation that comes up every time
we have a strong - running play on campus. People are turned away si[...]d hear.

Mack Davis will be performing here soon. The embarrassment and shame of
inadequate entertainment facilities will share top billing with him — as they will
with all the performers who come to GCC — until we acquire an auditorium.

Veteran's bill supported

A telegram from Sen. Barry Gold-
water, R-Ariz.. concerning the increase
in veteran‘s benefits in the GI
Educational Bill was received recently
by Dr. Matt 0. Hanhila. Executive Dean.

The telegram reads as follows: “More
than 150 letters have reached my desk
from veterans at your college who have
let me know of their support for the
Senate version of the GI. Educational
Bill. and I would appreciate it v[...]m happy to report that Congress did
adopt more of the Senate version than it
did of the House version in the bill it
cleared for the White House.

“The new bill increases the monthly
rate for a single veteran to $220 a month
and lifts the married veteran‘s rate to
$261, with an additional increase to $298
in the case of married veterans with a
child. An extra $[...]yments will be retroactive to Sept. 1,
and I hope the new bill will be accepted
as an honest effort by Congress to
recognize the enormots debt we owe to
the nation‘s veterans."

The crowd of 1500 people who attended
Jose Greco's lecture - demonstration
recital last Friday night were undaunted
by floods and rain.

Greco instructed the audience about
the various regions in Spain and his
leading lady, Nana Lorca, demorstrated
the principal folk dances of sections such
as Andalus[...]Greco explained costumes and
customs of Spain and the main style of
each regional dance. Senor Greco said
that Spanish dancing was the only form
of dance that embodied all the
movements of dance. while other
countries of the world employed only one
or two of the main elements.

All costumes worn by Ms. Lorca were
authentic in their design. Each reflected
the tastes and tims of the region and
period demonstrated.

Greco’s unique lecture - demonstration
format was created when colleges and
universities across the United States
asked him toexplain the fine points of the
Spanish dance.

“I am not a speaker, I am a dancer."
he said after the show. He commented
that although the subject matter was
easy to choose from, that it was a little

Professional and amateur photog-
raphers from all over the world were
invited to submit prints for consideration
for the competition. 92 black and white
prints were submitted. 244 were selected
for the exhibit. The competition is
sponsored by the Arizona State Fair in
conjunction with the Photographic
Society of America.

Walter‘s print, entitled “Afternoon"
depictsa storage tank and the interesting
shadows that are cast by the late af-
ternoon sun. Adamson's print is entitled[...]t is approximately 3
inches by 3 inches and is of the same
subject. By alternately mounting these
prints on a mounting board an interesting
mosaic is formed.

The exhibit is opened to the public in
the Arts and Crafts building at the State
Fairgrounds from now to November 12.

lures classes

Where is the largest solar telescope in
the world located'.’ Right here in Arizona.
Kitt Peak National Observatory.[...]ience
classes traveled recently on a field trip.

The observatory. financed by the
National Science Foundation. provides
tours for large or small groups. GCC
students were shown two films at the Kitt
Peak Museum and then taken through
the site and were shown the 84-inch
reflecting telescope and the Robert R.
McMath solar telescope. the largst in
the world used for study of the sun. and
named for its creator.

The entire site stretches over the
Qiinlan Mountains and is a self»
supporting center The University of
Arizona‘s Steward Observatory has its
telescopes also located at Kitt Peak.

The visiting hours are from 10 am. to 4
pm. daily. If one desires to arrange a
tour. all the Tucson Business Office at
327-5511. and take advantage of the tour.
After all. how many can say they‘ve seen
the world‘s largest solar telescope?

The Boys‘ Club of Phoenix is offering
six male college students the opportunity
to work in a work—study program at the
Butler Unit. 1652 E. Moreland.

These are paid. part-time positions
Tuesday through Friday evenings and all

Once again. it was the Gauchos' Ernie
Perez who took individual honors in the
San Diego Invitational.

There were two categories in the
tournament, one for schools over 4.000
students and one for schools under 4000
The distance for the meet was 4.3 miles

Glendale finished in first place for the
small schools with 21 points. followed by
Moore Park. Calif, with 74‘ Central
Arizona with 76. and Mesa Community
with 98.

The Gauchos finished with four out of
the top five individuals in Perez
(22:373). Fred Espinoza (2nd. 22:30t;
Chuck Foster of Central Arizona 13rd.
222491: Kevin Fellows 14th. 23:01) and
Dennis Eberhart (5th, 23:08).

In the large school division. El Camino.
Calif. and Phoe[...]in total
points with 56 but El Camino was
awarded the first position because its

There was also a sweepstakes race in
the tournament which combined both
divisions. The winning team was the one

Ever since the idea of voting was put into action thousands of y[...]iters have written countless editorials stressing the importance of voting. the con-
sequences of not voting. and the symbolism of the actual act.

Millions of voters in the United States will soon exercise this privilege which. for the
first time. will include the 18to 21-yearold age bracket.

Since the much-wanted emancipation of youth was finally leg[...]audience to preach their material to.

It is not the intention of this newspaper to do the same thing. however. El Tiempo
Pasando wishes to point out that all the political rhetoric and lyrical symbolism merely
serves to cover up the most important issue of the democratic process.

Voting is a privilege and a[...]spects of voicing your opinion through voting for the candidate of your choice. Voting

The entrance of the seventies has
brought a turn in direction for the
popular culture of the United States.
“Organic food" is in fashion now. while
synthesis of the real thing was a current
in the sixties. Men‘s clothes reflect well-
beloved T[...]nteringi a more
romantic era of dress.

Not since the days of Teddy Roosevelt
has conservation been such a popular
subject. Horses are experiencing the
largest popularity since the advent of the
automobile, and makers of camping
equipment are having a heyday.

The significance can be discerned in
this movement through the ”Hundred
Year Club" concept. Many people look
back past the last century to an age of
greater freedom and ind[...]k that superficial comforts are no
substitute for the smell of fresh air and
the sight of distant horizons.

controversy. Ms. Camp's letter was the
first letter received by the newsroom
and. in the interest of fair play. those
directly involved in organizing the ac-
tivities were given the chance to tell their
side of the story. The letters represent
members of the student body. the school
administration. and the volunteer
homecoming committee.)

Questions raised

Dear Editor.

It‘s true that the rain preceeding
homecoming was a major factor in the
outcome of the night. but can it be the
total cause?

Could it just be lack of interest? That is
doubtful. Just who picked the candidates
for homecoming king and queen? Were
th[...]or published in a paper”!
And what happened to the people in
athletics who were chosen as can-
didat[...]people were
overlooked by accident? And how about
the people sitting at the tables as you
entered the dance? As you paid your
money. you were given a b[...]at Glendale
Community College. then let's cancel the
next one. Why should a small minority

majority‘s choice of candidates. when. in
fact. they wouldn‘t be their choices at

I'm sure this is the view of many people
shared Saturday night at the dance.
Either homecoming should be run by a
responsible committee or it shouldn't be

Dear Editor:

The Associated Students have received
a lot of flack concerning the homecoming
ceremonies. It should be pointed out t[...]a total of four people who
offered their help in the planning and
work involved in presenting a
homecoming. We (the homecoming
committee» received no offers of support
from the pom-puns or the cheerleaders in
any way. shape. or form.

Ms. Camp states in her letter that there
was no advance notice in the newspaper.

It would be obvious to ALMOST anyone
that the newspaper did not come out
Hiday as expected due to the flood and
the cancellation of classes. It was very
difficult to[...]Camp
that many peoples‘ names did not appear
on the ballots. There was a memo sent
out specifically stating that all
homecoming nominations were to be sent
to the HOM ECOMING COM-
MISSIONER. Judging by the places
these nominations turned up (after the
event) it would appear that some groups
did not read the memo carefully enough.

Finally. Ms. Camp stated that we'

should have canceled the homecoming
events. We feel that by canceling
home[...]care.

There is a lot of prejudice shown
towards the AS due to the activities
dispute. and cancelling homecoming
would have only added to those
prejudices. We feel we did the best we
could under these unusual cir-
cumstanca.[...]d. Note: I received a list of
homecoming nominees from those people
were were left off the final ballot. This
was before the ballots were run off. and.
having assigned the story to one of the
staff reporters. I gave the list to him in
the hopes of getting a story and some
accompanying ph[...]-
fortunately. he found out that our list was
not the entire list compiled by
homecoming commissioner Jim
Klee—zcwslci and so ETP held off in
writing up the article. when El Tiempo
Pasando finally went to press. the list
still had not become official due to the
ineligibility of some of the candidates. In
order to avoid printing a “no—news”
story. ETP merely printed all the con-
crete information we had in two boxes in
the paper. Because of the cancellation of
classes, the newspaper could not be
distributed in the usual manner and was
handed out at the Jose Greco concert
instead.»

Committee praised

Dear Editor:

As Freshmen class adviser I had the
privilege of working with students on the
Homecoming activities. With very little
time. student cooperation and the
problems of the recent flood. the
Associated Students were not able to plan
extensive activities for the game.

However. Associated Student Officers
did hold an election of Homecoming
royalty at the dance and helped the
fieshmen class defray the expenses of
the band. They also initiated a little
"monkey-business" ~ the appearance of
the Glendale Gorrilla. I saw some en-
thusiasm from the students that has been
too long in coming.

Every Freshmen Class Officer was at
the dance and the President. Bob
Mothershead stayed to the end to be sure
everything was carried out.

I would tspecially like to commend
not only the officers of the Freshmen
class. Bob Mothershead.Shona Smith.

Dear Editor:

In the Oct. 20 issue of El Tiempo
Pasando. Bob Burd pointed out[...]uld like to point out that this figure is
more in the area of $64,834. This is not a
shocking figure until it is compared with
919.359 spent on all other activities
combined.

These figures (both athletic and
academic» do not include the activity fee
waivers. Out of about 415 fee waivers
awarded about 240 of these go towards
athletics with the remaining 175 going to
all other departments on the campus
music. art. journalism. academic. etc.)
To[...]gure and see that
athletics receives almost twice the
amount of money tthat all the other
activtties on campus combined receive.
it m[...]ies need reorganizing.

Bob Burd also states that the members
of the student government should go and
see the crowds at one of the football
games. It is a fact that members of the
Associated Student government have
attended many[...]ound them most enjoyable. but this does
not alter the fact that TOO MUCH
MONEY IS ALLOCATED T0
ATHLETIC[...]and
strength is here for another exciting
season. The sport: wrestling.

The returning sophomores on the
wrestling team are Brent Ackyen. Don
Armsey. Rand[...]immett. Jim Juhl. Eric
fievens. and Jim McLain.

The freshmen include the following:
Paul Gillot. David Crandell. Steve
Oka[...]. Gil Napoleon. William
Putman. and Rich Larsen.

The wratlers over the past years have
always represented GCC with top honors.
The facts speak for themselves. The
following is 3 1971-72 team recap: in dual
meets there were 11 wins. 3 losses. and 2
tis.

The wrestling team placed fifth in the
Southwestern California Tournament.
first in the Mesa Arizona-California
Tournament. first in the Phoenix College
Takedown Tournament. third in Pho[...]second in
Cypress California Tournament. first in
the Colorado Dual Meet Tournament.
second in the Arizona JD. Cham-
pionships. and finally first in the South-
west Zone Championships

GCC bowling forms into association

This semester the GCC bowling class
has formed into a bowling association.
Three teams of five. two male. one
female. were developed and compete

Tribute paid
to Robinson

The El Tiempo Pasando staff wishes to
pay tribute to Jackie Robinson. who in
1947 broke the color barrier as the first
Negro to play major league baseball.
Robinson played his entire career with
the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Robinson died Oct. 24 in Stamford.
Conn at the young age of 53. of a heart
attack.

Jackie was b[...]like any
other youngster. Jackie played sports in
the streets and fieldsof his home town.

While in col[...]ards a
carry and set a long jump record of
nearly 26 feet and led the Pacific<8 in
basketball scoring.

In 1947 Robinso[...]irst baseman,
was named National League Rookie of
the Year.

Robinson was a five-time NL AllaStar
and won the Most Valuable Player award
in 1949. In 1961 he became the first black
to be elected to the baseball hall of Fame.
Over his ioyear career. Ro[...]a great athlete. but as a tremendous
example for the young people he worked
with so closdy. young people all across
America.

direction of Moonie Kong. the tour-
nament bowlers are incorporated into
and derive from the 8 am. Friday
bowling class.

Also included into the Maricopa lanes
housed class is the GCC Intramural
Bowling Tourney. Each member of the
class is divided into one of four
categories. Skill and potential determine
into which youp the individual bowlers
will be placed.

At the end of the eight weeks. the first.
second and third place finishers. in each[...]ed with GCC in-
tramural medals. Determination of the
winners is based on the sum of averages
compiled during the eight week com-
petition.

Gauchos lose homecoming, 7-3;
defenses gave Hokams tough battle

rated 15th in the country and possessing
an explosive offense and a punishing
defense But unfortunately for the
llokanis it was Glendale's Homecoming
and the Gauchos did what they're best
at "Gavc 'em Hell."

For the fourth week in a row. Glen-
dalc's defense turned in an unbelievable
performance incontaining 11 the running
of tlashy Mesa halfback John McCollum
2: the passmg of quarterback Dave
Mendez Ill the receiving of end Mark
Miller When the smoke cleared. the
Hokams were on the bus and heading
home. Just barely escaping with a 7-3
surprise victory

Why surprise0 Because up to game
time Mesa was favored by as much as
three touchdowns over the Gauchos and
instead of being the conquerors they
were almost the conquered But the
Hokams did learn some valuable lessons.
though

in the area of Gaucho defensive back

hall while around Glendale defensive

\\’ith less than fiw minutes left in the

game and the Gauchos leading 3-0. two
good passes by Mendez and a 27-yard run
by McCollum carried the ball down to
Glenadale's 1 yard line. One play later.
llokam fullback Gary Jensen blasted in
for the score and Roy Aguayo‘s extra
point kick gave Mesa a 7-3 lead. This was
all the Hokams needed as any offensive
power the Gauchos tried to generate was
stalled by Mesa

Glendale did get on the scoreboard late
in the third quarter Some good running

by Gaucho halfba[...]gave Glendale good
field position inside Mesa‘s 20 From
there. Gaucho place-kicker Cardell
(‘amper drilled an 18 yard field goal
through the uprights to give Glendale her
only points of the game.

The Gaucho‘s attempted a game
winning touchdown in the last three
minutes of the final quarter but a tough
Mesa defesne stopped Glendale‘s drive to
preserve the 7-3 victory.
