What does eligible noncitizen mean on FAFSA? ›

1. You are a U.S. national or permanent resident. U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swains Island) or. U.S. permanent resident with a Form I-551 or I-151 (Permanent Resident Card, Resident Alien Card, or Alien Registration Receipt Card), also known as a “green card.”

You can receive federal student aid if you are an eligible noncitizen. You must enter your eight- or nine-digit Alien Registration number on the FAFSA^® form.

An individual who is a non-legally-residing noncitizen who presents a Final Order of Deportation is ineligible. When a noncitizen applying for SNAP benefits indicates an inability or unwillingness to provide information or acceptable verification of an eligible noncitizen status that person will be ineligible.

Other reasons for financial aid disqualification include: Not maintaining satisfactory progress at your college or degree program. Not filling out the FAFSA each year you are enrolled in school. Defaulting on a student loan.

Grades Slipped or Haven't Completed Enough Credits

You need to make satisfactory academic progress in college or career school in order to keep getting federal student aid. Talk to your school about whether you can appeal the decision that made you ineligible to continue receiving federal student aid.
