Introducción

¿Qué es el mpox?

El mpox (antes conocido como viruela del simio, viruela del mono o viruela símica) es una enfermedad rara causada por la infección con el virus del mpox. Este virus pertenece a la misma familia del virus de la viruela, pero el mpox es menos contagioso que la viruela. Además, su enfermedad causa síntomas más leves y en general no es fatal.

En el pasado, la mayoría de las personas que contrajeron mpox vivían en ciertas partes de África central y occidental, habían viajado allí o estuvieron expuestas a animales infectados importados de esa área. Durante el brote reciente, la enfermedad se detectó en personas que viven en otros países, incluyendo Estados Unidos.

¿Cómo se propaga el mpox?

El mpox se propaga de diferentes maneras:

¿Cuáles son los tratamientos para el mpox?

No existen tratamientos específicos para el mpox, pero muchas personas mejoran por sí solas.

Dado que el mpox y la viruela son similares, los medicamentos antivirales que protegen contra la viruela también pueden ayudar a tratar el mpox. También se pueden recomendar medicamentos antivirales para quienes tienen más probabilidades de enfermarse gravemente, como pacientes con sistemas inmunitarios debilitados.

¿Se puede prevenir el mpox?

Existen pasos que puede tomar para ayudar a prevenir el mpox:

  • Evite el contacto cercano de piel con piel con la erupción del mpox. Por ello, si una persona está enferma de mpox:

  • En África central y occidental, evite el contacto con animales que puedan propagar el virus del mpox, como roedores y primates. Además, evite los animales enfermos o muertos, así como cualquier ropa de cama u otros materiales que hayan tocado

Si está enfermo de mpox, se recomienda que se quede en casa mientras dure la afección, si es posible. Si presenta sarpullido u otros síntomas, si puede es preferible que esté en una habitación separada de sus familiares y mascotas.

El Gobierno de los Estados Unidos tiene dos vacunas para proteger contra el mpox. Una fue aprobada para la viruela y el mpox (JYNNEOS), y la otra fue aprobada para la viruela (ACAM2000):

  • JYNNEOS es la vacuna preferida para proteger contra el mpox. Es una vacuna de dos dosis
  • ACAM2000 puede ser una alternativa a JYNNEOS. ACAM2000 es una vacuna de dosis única, pero tiene el potencial de más efectos secundarios y eventos adversos que JYNNEOS.
