He was married to the Queen, so why wasn't Prince Philip king? (2024)

Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history.

He married the then-princess Elizabeth in 1947 and was by her side for her coronation in 1953, when he officially became prince consort.

But despite being married to the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh was never king.

Here's what we know about why he was never given the title.

What exactly was Prince Philip's title?

Most commonly, he was referred to as His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

By definition, Prince Philip was a prince consort, meaning the husband of a queen, but not automatically a king.

He was bestowed with the titles Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich when he married Elizabeth.

He also had a long list of earned, ceremonial and honorary ranks and titles, like Lord High Admiral, which was gifted to him by the Queen for his 90th birthday.

He also had an Australian knighthood, awarded to him by then-prime minister Tony Abbott in 2015.

Could Prince Philip have become a king?

Prince Philip married into the British royal family. When King George VI died in 1952, Philip's wife Elizabeth, the dead king's daughter, was next in line for the throne.

But that didn't make Philip king.

Historically, the title of king has usually been reserved for an active monarch.

Some spouses of queens have been given the title of kings and gone on to co-rule with their wives, but other queens declared their husbands prince consorts and ruled on their own.

Queen Elizabeth had the power to make Prince Philip the first king consort in England's history if she really wanted to, but she never did, so he remained a prince and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The titles of queen or queen consort, however, can be used either for a ruling monarch or ceremonially for the wife of a crowned king.

Can you have a king and a queen at the same time?

Yes — but you don't have to.

When a king is crowned, his wife usually becomes queen or some variation of the title.

Queen Elizabeth II's mother, also Elizabeth, became queen consort when her husband was crowned king, and was most commonly known as the Queen Mother.

When Prince William becomes king, his wife Kate will become queen consort and go by the title of Queen Catherine.

But Prince Charles's wife Camilla likely won't become queen consort when Charles takes over the throne — not strictly based on tradition, but based on preference.

When Camilla and Charles were married, they released a statement confirming that the duch*ess of Cornwall would not use the Princess of Wales title, as a sign of respect for Charles's first wife, the late Princess Diana.

They also foreshadowed that Camilla would not take the queen consort title when Charles is crowned, with a spokesperson confirming that she will be known as princess consort instead.

There was some dispute over this around the time of their wedding, with some members of the British government saying Camilla would automatically be queen when Charles became king.

But a spokesperson for the Department of Constitutional Affairs said at the time that there was no single law stating that someone with the duch*ess of Cornwall's future position had to be known as queen.

"A lot of it is down to convention rather than legislation, which is why she can be referred to as whatever she likes without having to change the law," the spokesperson said.

Who's next in line for the throne?

The Queen and Prince Philip's oldest son Prince Charles is next in line.

Charles' oldest son William is next, then William's first son, George.

After that, the line of succession takes some twists and turns — including allowing for a change of legislation introduced in 2013, which ruled that younger sons could no longer displace older daughters born after October 28, 2011.

That means Princess Charlotte is fourth in line for the throne, below her older brother George, but ahead of her younger brother Louis.

The current order of succession is:

1. Charles, Prince of Wales

2. William, Duke of Cambridge

3. Prince George of Cambridge (William and Kate's oldest child)

4. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge (William and Kate's second child)

5. Prince Louis of Cambridge (William and Kate's third child)
