The most frequent question Spanish learners ask is how to be fluent in Spanish.

How long does it take to be fluent in a Spanish conversation? It depends on you and the time and effort you dedicate to learning.

In this blog post, I show you strategies, tips, and tricks on how to have a fluent conversation in Spanish relatively quickly. Ready to get started?

The Difference Between Fluent and Conversational

First, let’s get some things clear. Do you want to know how to be fluent in Spanish or how to be conversational in Spanish? Many students aim to have a relaxed conversation on any topic, making themselves understood and understanding others.

The concept of being “fluent” is vague. Linguists do not agree on what it means to be fluent. If you think about native-level fluency, you’ll need to master between 20,000 and 40,000 words, and as you can see the margin is quite large.

If you want to have a basic conversation, experts say that you’ll just need around 3,000 words.

Many people are bilingual or multilingual, and their levels of fluency are different in different languages. Nonetheless, they can have a fluent conversation in all of them, and travel easily around the world.

We’ll therefore focus on how to be fluent in Spanish to have a conversation with a native speaker!

How To Be Fluent in a Spanish Conversation

It’s easy to get excited when you have your first conversation in a foreign language. Suddenly, all that you have learned starts to come together. Your theoretical knowledge becomes practical.

What can you do to experience this thrill at an early stage of your learning journey?

By following certain strategies from day one, you can boost your skills and learn to hold a conversation.

1. Have a Learning Routine

It’s important to sit for a moment and take a look at your weekly schedule. Ask yourself:

  • When is the best time for active learning?
  • When will you learn new words and grammar structures?
  • When do you want to review what you’ve learned?
  • When can you listen to Spanish audio while doing other things?

With a well-done learning plan, you’re halfway to success. Mark your learning periods in your agenda and stick to it. You learn a language with consistency.

2. Immerse Yourself in Spanish

Spanish immersion is crucial. Surround yourself with the language you’re learning to get used to its rhythm, accent, and pronunciation. By listening to Spanish as much as possible, you’ll start hearing vocabulary and grammar structures in context.

Try repeating sentences and phrases out loud to imitate native speakers. Get yourself good audiobooks, podcasts, and videos with easy Spanish to practice from the comfort of home.

3. Start Speaking as Soon as Possible

Don’t wait until you know 3,000 words to start speaking! You don’t need to master all 18 Spanish verb tenses before uttering a word!

If you want to know how to be fluent in Spanish, the answer is: speaking.

Start speaking on the first day of learning Spanish. Even if you just know how to say your name and ask the other person about the same, that’s enough. Start where you are—with the basics.

Other ways to practice speaking include making imaginary conversations in your head, practicing with fellow learners, using chat apps, and changing the language of your phone and other devices to Spanish.

Always try to use the new words, grammar structures, and expressions you’ve learned. Only by practicing and using them frequently can you make them yours.

4. Don’t Be Shy

I’m a shy learner. I love practicing by myself, and I’m afraid to make mistakes in front of others. And I know that I have to overcome my own shyness to tackle another language.

You have to make many mistakes to learn a language. Then, you’ll remember. And the moment you’re aware of your own mistakes, you’re truly learning the language and can self-correct yourself.

5. Practice Imaginary Conversations

I know it’s not always easy to find a speaking partner on your level. Imaginary conversations are a great way to practice your speaking skills and the answer to your question: how to be fluent in Spanish?

How to do it? Find a topic and brainstorm the words and expressions you already know to talk about it. What words and expressions would you like to learn? Don’t choose more than five.

Try to write down a conversation. Read it out loud. Check the pronunciation of any words you don’t know. Read it again. Record yourself.

6. Celebrate Success

It’s important to celebrate your success and reward yourself. Sometimes, distant goals look too distant and you can lose motivation on the way.

Get yourself an empty jar, for example, and fill it with a colored marble every time you achieve something you want. Whenever you stick to your daily routine, speak to somebody in Spanish for a minute, create an imaginary conversation with new vocabulary, or whatever suits you best.

What will be your reward after you fill in the jar to its rim? Maybe a trip to a Spanish-speaking country? Or a new Spanish book? Or maybe just a movie night or a spa visit? The reward does not have to be language-related, it just has to motivate you.
